Why use ALARM?

Improves literacy and builds student agency

ALARM empowers learners to take greater ownership of their thinking and writing, building the confidence and skills needed to engage more actively and independently in their learning.

For teachers, ALARM provides a consistent approach to explicit teaching, assessment, and feedback. It creates a shared language of learning across faculties.

Schools using ALARM have consistently reported greater clarity in teaching, increased student agency and improved learning outcomes.

How does ALARM work?

Explicit teaching of learning skills

ALARM breaks down learning into clear, teachable skills. It helps students move from simple recall to deeper skills like analysis, evaluation and conceptual thinking.

Teachers use ALARM to explicitly teach these skills, structure assessment tasks, and guide students in constructing responses that meet syllabus outcomes and performance standards.

Deconstructing through to constructing

ALARM transforms teaching and learning by guiding students from deconstructing questions to constructing high-quality responses. Teachers use the framework to unpack questions, align marking guidelines, scaffold thinking, and support students in structuring responses at the right depth.

By embedding ALARM into the design, development and delivery of lessons, teachers empower students to develop clarity, critical thinking, and confidence in their written responses, which leads to improved literacy outcomes.
